The Right Name for the Team

Houston's MLS team is now Houston Dynamo.

Back when I was consulting I thought about naming my company (if I ever got around to making myself a company) Trestle Computing. Like I built stuff to bridge the gap between you and your data. That sounds dorky until you read some of the justifications for the name of the soccer team.

The scientific genius behind the dynamo's invention is the rotation of a single magnet, whose North and South poles create electricity in a nearby coiled wire.

"We believe a parallel can be drawn to the two major communities in Houston: English speakers and Spanish speakers, who together will create electricity at games unlike any other in MLS."

Still, names can grow on you. I remember trying to name my team of four and five year old players last year. Here we are in the third season as the Jackrabbits and Saturday I just got affirmed in it.

As we were running over the poor little All Stars (we scored at least 12 goals to none) their coach commented on the appropriateness of our name seeing as how my kids "sure are fast."

I'm non-plussed about the Dynamo name. If there had been no 1836, it would be about the same. I was looking forward to singing "Texas Our Texas" in the supporters section. Chanting "Let's go, Dynamo" just doesn't inherit the massive Texan pride. But let them run rampant over their opponents and the pride will grow.
