There's a coffee table book of Alex Ross' DC artwork called Mythology that I like to look at when I visit the book store. As a rule, I read comics for the stories and don't pay much attention to the art (unless it sucks and subsequently detracts from the story). Ross, though, paints these photo-realistic images that are often breathtaking. He had an eye from early childhood. There are a couple pictures in the begining of the book that he did at age 3 that would be about all I could hope to accomplish at age 35.
I tried to interest Kevin in the book, but he still can't distinguish Superman from Spiderman. There was one picture of Superman carrying a train over a bridge that was out that held him for some time. Then he was back to his books of construction vehicles and Thomas tanker. Maybe I'll have more luck making a geek of Madeline.
The opening pages of Mythology describe two myths. 1) If you work really hard and persevere you can do anything you want and 2) No matter how hard you work and persevere you'll never get what you want. I'm sure it says something pithy after that, but I was distracted by the pretty pictures.
Anyway, my friend, manasclerk, is running after the first one. Such myths beat the deadly certainty that if you don't try you'll never get what you want.
Do what fits. Be fit. Do. Much love to you man!
