Vacation's All I Ever Wanted

Miracles all around, I think. I wonder what I should expect from this weekend. If there can be miracles elsewhere in my life, why not there? I am hard pressed for it, I think. Why not, Yule?

I met with LH today. What a conversation! Exhausting and wonderful. I was afraid of getting started right, but we got straight into it. I'll put up my thoughts on the management site.

Good New and Splitting Sides

It's been an interesting week, Yule. One of the kids in the youth group, who didn't think that she would even get into college, got what amounts to full-rides to Hope, Evansville and Depauw. Wow. It includes, with a bit of loans and less work than she does now as a high school senior – room, board, fees, estimated book costs, estimated living expenses and estimated travel expenses.

Wow.

I was praying for tuition and fees, figuring that I would have to find the rest of the money. As Chase pointed out, God just said, "Get out of the way! Your vision is too small!"

And good news continued. On Easter, we not only had a great time over at the V's, but also heard from L's sister: she's engaged! Yeah, we're both really happy them. I mean, it's next year, so it's not going to overshadow Spooky Girl's birth – gotta claim hat family space. We think he's swell and are glad that they're tying the knot.

Developing a Tribe of Leaders?

From "Thought Leader Interview with Rick Lash: Developing Better Leaders, Faster" on HR.com:

I spent some time coaching a senior financial executive of a major global organization. One of the things he said was, “It’s really nice to have grown up in this organization, where I feel I have a tribe.” I kind of paused and I said, “What do you mean by a tribe?” and he said, “Well, I have been in this organization for 20 years and there was a group of us who all started at roughly the same time and even though we have all gone on to different roles in the organization, we all feel that we have this deep connection to each other. That deep connection enables us to be able to navigate in the organization, influence the right people, get the information that we need and also feel that we have mutual support.”

That type of network or tribe takes years to build up and is critical for effective influence and for developing a “big picture” view of the organization.

I'm not sure that it really takes years to build up. I think that the timeframe is stratum dependent. These folks probably all came in at the same stratum and age, and therefore tracked together.

There's a problem with having one of these tribes, too: they can be destructive to new people in a higher-mode coming up.

The Non-Cheeky Bio for the Book

They finally got me to do a non-cheeky biographical sketch for the book I worked on. I suppose that it works out okay.

manasclerk is a professional writer and editor in the North End who works with experts to translate their ideas and thoughts into books, articles and websites. He began writing about Brown's and Jaques's ideas in 2003 for his website, which attracted a vigorous discussion from a variety of backgrounds. He enjoyed making the complex concepts plain to his divers audiences, including working with RO experts to help them explain their work results to normal business audiences. Working with the GO Society, he has written or ghost-written several case studies of RO implementations.

Previously an IT consultant, he has worked with IT security and software development groups in the US and Europe, and did business process redesign, including ISO 9001. He created an early (1994) ecommerce site and securely enabled over US$145B in bond offerings for a Swiss bank. He started his career as a trainer in environmental, health and safety, and was briefly considered an expert in US EPA's toxic chemical release reports.

In his spare time, he coaches underemployed high-potentials in managing their careers using RO concepts.

I prefer the other one because it attracts exactly the type of people I like to work with. But what can you do?

Hope things are well in your side of the world, Yule.
